The Engagement

By Steve

We dated long distance for several months, with me stuck in Utah, working and continuing my education at BYU, and Dianne in Raleigh at NCSU.  We would email often and chat on-line as often as occasion would permit, with interspersed phone calls.  Every three months or so either Dianne or I would fly to the other's state and enjoy a brief face to face visit. I knew in February that I loved Dianne and my love for her increased with each day that passed.  After many prayers, and a lot of thought and consideration of my deep feelings for Dianne, I decided I wanted to marry her and spend the rest of my life with her.

With a brief description of what she desired in an engagement ring, and a little knowledge of what type of surprises she likes and dislikes, I began planning how I would pop the question. We had talked a lot about marriage, so I wanted her to still be quite surprised. At the knowledge of no one but myself, I began making plans.  I had a ring made and bought a plane ticket.  I then asked her father for her hand in marriage and swore him to secrecy until I had proposed to Dianne. I researched a few nice restaruants, a few florists, made a vehicle reservation and set out to Raleigh.

I left Utah late on a Friday night on a red-eye flight to Raleigh. I landed early the next morning in Raleigh and freshened up at bit and headed to the local florist in the jaguar I rented (she likes jaguars!) I called her from the florist, to make sure that she would be at home, leading her to believe that I was still in Utah and then headed to her house. With the flowers in hand I knocked on her door. Dianne answered the door and was quite surprised, to say the least, and could only respond with a very happy and excited "What are you doing here!" She led me to the living room and placed the flowers on the dinning room table and invited me to sit on the couch with her. I informed that she could sit or stand, but I was going to do this properly and got down on one knee.  It was at that moment she realized why I was there.  I told her of my feelings for her and asked her to be my wife. She said YES!!!
