How We Met

By Dianne

In a subway in New York, Steve gave up his seat for me and I gave him my heart . . .

Or

On a ski slope in Ouray CO, I was just learning to snowboard and crashed into a stand of trees and Steve saw my distress and pulled me out and pretty soon I was falling in love and not into trees . . .

Or

While serving a missions for our church in Detroit, we were called to serve in the same area, Monroe, we met and became friends.

If you guessed the last one you are right. Steve served a mission for our church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) from 1993 to 1995 and I served from 1994 to 1996 in the Detroit area. Steve had been serving in the Monroe area for about 2 months towards the end of his mission. I was still new to the mission thing when I was transferred into the Monroe area in the late spring of 1995. We worked together as missionaries for about three months, then Steve was transferred to another area outside of Detroit and was soon after released and returned to Utah to finish his education at Brigham Young University (BYU). I remained in the Detroit area for another 10 or so months before I returned to Utah to finish my education at BYU. There was at least one exchange of letters between Steve and I while I was still serving in Detroit and after he had returned home, but there were no romantic tones to this exchange, only friendly correspondences.
